Bhumana Karunakar Reddy once wielded considerable influence over Tirupati’s politics. Today, the former MLA faces a tougher political landscape, with the 2024 election defeat of his son, Bhumana Abhinay Reddy, and subsequent defections from the YSR Congress Party raising questions about the family’s grip on local politics.
Abhinay Reddy’s defeat in the 2024 Assembly election was a major setback for the Bhumana camp. The scale of the loss indicated that the political support the family had built over the years was no longer translating into electoral success on the same scale.
The difficulties did not end there. The movement of several corporators away from the YSRCP further weakened its position in the municipal corporation. For a leader whose influence has rested partly on his network of local representatives and party workers, such defections represent a serious organisational challenge.
However, declaring Bhumana politically finished would be premature. He continues to be an important YSRCP leader in Tirupati and remains involved in the party’s efforts to regain lost ground. His political experience, local contacts and association with the YS family continue to matter in the city’s political calculations.
The immediate challenge is to rebuild confidence among party workers, prevent further defections and reconnect with voters who moved away from the YSRCP. The Telugu Desam-led alliance, meanwhile, has an opportunity to strengthen its municipal presence following the opposition party’s setbacks.
The crucial question is whether Bhumana can convert his personal political network into renewed support for the party. Personal influence and electoral strength are not always the same, particularly when local leaders begin shifting loyalties.
For now, the evidence points to a leader under pressure rather than one who has lost all relevance. Tirupati’s changing political equations will determine whether Bhumana can regain lost ground or whether the setbacks since 2024 signal a more lasting decline in the family’s influence.
