Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has triggered a fresh controversy with his latest post on X defending films that show violence.
Reacting to criticism of films such as Animal and Dhurandhar, Varma compared the criticism of violent films to blaming the Ramayana for kidnappings.
His post came after YouTuber Dhruv Rathee questioned whether films showing extreme violence could influence people in real life. Rathee referred to the recent chainsaw attack on a Class 10 student at a government school in Raptadu, Anantapur district.
Varma's comments drew sharp reactions on social media. Several users questioned his comparison and said filmmakers should also think about the impact of violent scenes on society.
Some argued that the Ramayana clearly shows kidnapping as a wrong act, while certain modern films appear to present violence as heroic.
The debate has once again brought filmmakers' responsibility into focus. While some support creative freedom, others believe cinema should not glorify violence.
Varma, known for his outspoken views and controversial social media posts, has once again found himself at the centre of a heated online debate.
