Malayalam superstar Mammootty may have moved on, but a section of social media users appears unwilling to let an old controversy rest. Senior CPI(M) leader P. Jayarajan has now stepped in to defend the actor, strongly condemning online attacks and reminding critics that the Wayanad episode was settled long ago.
In a Facebook post, Jayarajan said the misunderstanding surrounding Mammootty’s visit to a rehabilitation township in Kalpetta had been cleared on the very day it arose. He pointed out that the actor shared a warm personal relationship with CPI(M) Wayanad district secretary K. Rafeeq, who accompanied him during the visit.
The controversy erupted after a video showed Mammootty asking Rafeeq not to walk alongside him throughout the visit. The actor reportedly did not want his presence to be mistaken for a politically arranged programme. The clip subsequently triggered criticism on social media.
However, Mammootty later spoke to Rafeeq, who confirmed that the issue had been resolved.
Jayarajan also criticised attempts to drag the actor into fresh controversies over his interactions with DYFI and SFI leaders. He said personal relationships should not become ammunition for online attacks. His intervention has brought the focus back to an uncomfortable question: why keep reopening an issue that those directly involved have already put behind them?
