NEW DELHI: For a small manufacturer struggling to raise money for a new production line, advanced machinery or an overseas expansion, access to long-term capital can make the difference between remaining small and becoming a major player.

The Union Cabinet's approval of a ₹10,000-crore commitment to the SME Growth Fund is aimed at addressing precisely this challenge. Announced on October 6, the initiative will provide equity capital to promising small and medium enterprises with established business models.

Manufacturing firms are expected to receive the largest share of the allocation. Businesses operating in industrial clusters in tier-II and tier-III cities are also in focus.

The proposed support is intended to help companies expand capacity, adopt technology, pursue acquisitions and enter international markets.

For smaller industrial centres, the potential benefits could extend beyond company balance sheets. Expansion may generate jobs, strengthen local supply chains and create opportunities for ancillary businesses.

The real test, however, will be how effectively the fund identifies deserving enterprises and translates government support into measurable growth.
