₹9,395 Cr ITC deal over mutual funding

MUMBAI: A massive block deal involving ITC has put the cigarette-to-consumer-goods conglomerate back in the market spotlight, with a major overseas investor selling shares worth nearly ₹9,395 crore.

A GQG Partners-linked fund sold approximately 36.51 crore ITC shares in the transaction reported on October 8. The shares were sold at ₹257.35 apiece, with major domestic and international institutional investors among the buyers.

The deal comes at a challenging time for ITC shareholders, with the company's stock facing pressure amid concerns over taxation and the pace of volume recovery.

The transaction raises an important question: does a large investor's exit signal diminishing confidence, or does it simply reflect portfolio rebalancing and an opportunity for other investors to buy into the company?

A block deal by itself does not establish the seller's reasons or predict the stock's future direction. Investors will be watching ITC's business performance, tax-related developments, and consumer demand for clearer signals.

For retail shareholders, the lesson is simple: big transactions deserve attention, but not blind imitation.
