Tollywood gets a breather with Dasara

Hyderabad: After a brutal September that ended without a single clean hit, the Telugu box office is finally breathing again. And not a moment too soon.

Tollywood gets a breather with Dasara

Representative image.

Trade circles admit September was a shock. Nani's big-ticket The Paradise failed to live up to its massive pre-release business of around Rs 100 crore in Telugu theatricals, and the first week of October stayed soft. That left Dasara as the make-or-break window.

It has delivered an opening, if not yet a blockbuster.

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 arrived on October 15 and continues to hold its ground in Telugu states on the strength of brand value, Anirudh's music and a wide release. A day later, Vijay Deverakonda-Rashmika Mandanna's period drama Ranabaali opened to a decent number. The film closed pre-sales at Rs 8.5 crore gross worldwide, with overseas nearly matching India at Rs 4 crore, and then clocked around Rs 7 crore share in AP and Telangana on Day 1 out of Rs 9 crore net, according to early distributor estimates.

The catch? The break-even is steep. Ranabaali needs roughly Rs 75 crore gross worldwide to be called a hit. Talk is mixed, and trade says the holiday boost will decide everything. "It has to perform really well during the Dasara holidays and shore up collections," a distributor noted.

In a twist, the real word-of-mouth story is a small film. Vikram Sahidev's "Anakapalli" released October 2 without big screens, is reporting housefull even on Monday nights and is now being called the content surprise of the season.

For Tollywood, the message is clear. Festivals can fill seats. Only content keeps them filled.
