CHENNAI: A disagreement over family wealth and business ownership has put one of India's prominent industrial families under the spotlight, with the dispute potentially heading towards a legal battle.

The differences involve TVS Motor chairman emeritus Venu Srinivasan, his wife and industrialist Mallika Srinivasan, and their children, Sudarshan Venu and Lakshmi Venu. At the heart of the disagreement is whether earlier family agreements settled the ownership of assets or merely divided business responsibilities.

Venu and Sudarshan's side maintains that the arrangements provided for a division of family assets. Mallika and Lakshmi's side disputes this interpretation, arguing that managing a company does not automatically confer ownership of the family's wealth.

The financial stakes are significant. TVS Motor had a market capitalisation of about ₹1.83 lakh crore, compared with roughly ₹24,000 crore for Sundaram Clayton, as reported on October 9.

Attempts at mediation have reportedly failed, and legal options are being considered. The family members declined to comment, according to reports.
